Does case of fired model send a bad message to young girls?

Filippa Hamilton first made headlines when an image photoshopped to make her look abnormally thin appeared in a Ralph Lauren ad....

Now the 23-year-old model says before the ad even came out, she was fired by Ralph Lauren for being too fat. Ralph Lauren says Hamilton was dropped for her "inability to meet the obligations of her contract."

Hamilton is size 4, is 5-10 and weighs 120 pounds. She says her weight has not fluctuated since she started working for the company eight years ago and she has no problem fitting into the sample clothing. She also says she was angry when she saw the photoshopped ad.

"I saw my face in this super, extremely skinny girl which is not me. It makes me sad," she told Ann Curry this morning. "It's not healthy, and it's not right."

Kate White, editor-in chief of Cosmo magazine, said women need to complain and protest...and then back it up with their pocket books.

What do you think? Is this case, and others like it, sending a bad message to young women? Will you protest with your pocket book?

Debbie - I don't recall the show discussing her financial condition as a reason for taking action. She won't have trouble getting work.

First of all. That was a stupid reason to fire her and it's not fair. If she's been with them since she was 15? There shouldn't be any reason why she should have to leave because she doesn't want to die jus to fit in the guys magazine i mean come on people!!. There has been so many young woman that have died tryin to fit the "contract" and be "obligated". That is such BS. And who ever said " so she got fired get over it?" Excuse me, that wasn't you that got fired for that rediculous reason!!! This subject upsets me so much, because of the fact that people have died at the age of 15 to be exact, tryin to please their boss! And millions of little girls are thinkin it's ok to be that thin and that it looks good and hot or whatever. It's nonsence and horrifying. To look at the beautiful people that do model and put them selves out there, and their boss expects more as in killing themselves slowly, the modeling agencies "handbook" needs to be rethought and thinkin bout the models. The whole American Dream is BS. let me tell ya, thats not the dream for america. She should go to someone and file a complaint against all the agencies, and put it in their face that maybe they have killed alot of freakin people tryin to make the American Dream. I have alot to say bout these modeling agencies. they take no responsiblilty when it comes to people that they killed. Anyways, i'm behind her all the way, and hope she finds something better in the future other than modeling companies that make her do that stupid @!$%#!

This is unbelievalbe! I have a 9 year old & her size is appropriate & healthy for her age. She has made comments at times that she's fat, which is not true, but all I can do reassure her she's normal for her height & age. It is ads & companies like this that affect the way our daughters & the way women in general think they should look. I am glad that I don't wear RL Brand, if I di I would discontinue my business with them. Of course she's hurt she got fired, we all would be. I don't think she's doing it for attention & if she is so what! Something like this should be brought to the public's attention.

Why anyone would want to be wafer thin is unthinkable as it is unatural. Icwas a 4 for years and asked by doctors to gain weight, I was 5'8 and 115lbs. Now I am a size 8 and enjoy a better quality of life because it is a more natural weight. Who does Ralph Lauren think he is by having a contractual stipulation on being a 2 or a 4. women are naturally a size 8 or more nowadays. It is not a sin to be bigger than a 2. If you value Phillippa so much after many years together then accomadate her new size. I am a avid buyer of Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci etc... but I will no longer support Ralph Lauren in any way no matter how much I like the designs etc... I hope other women feel this way and show the company our superpower by boycotting the company.

I would like to see Ralph Lauren wear a size O!!! I don't care if this is her work - what is wrong with these people? We have fake stories by journalists and fake pictures by fasion designers - it all boils down to money and greed - less material makes more money - the True sizing is gone forever. Where is reality in this society? We even have fake tv shows and stars and celebrities who are famous for nothing - i feel sorry for children today - especially girls.

I will never buy a designer piece of clothing again and not that anyone cares but it makes me feel better about myself! It makes me sick that we are losing truth slowly but surely - and don't say that is the way it has always been - just because it "is" doesn't make it right -

I think the longer we as "the public" allow these injustices against our culture it will go on....He(Ralphy) obviously can act like a child and dictate that we all go malnourished....Yet as woman we are supossed to be soft and supple ... when will we as humans stick up for our normalcey

This not right, all women young & old are beautiful no matter how they look. If the fashion world wants "skinny" then " those corporate exec. s" are not true to thier nature. Just how FAT are they? Do they fit the thier idea of skinny?

Well theres the other side too.... while I don't deny being too thin is dangerous, why is there never an outcry over all the overweight people on TV - sitcoms etc. It is a FACT that being overweight is unhealthy and even just an extra 5-10 lbs carries increased risks of heart disease etc... yet apparently its OK to promote this... why? Because the vast majority of people are overweight and they all want to be made to feel better about themselves and their lazy/unhealthy habits. I am made to feel a freak most places because I am a healthy normal weight person with normal healthy weight kids who all eat heathy and exercise.

Stop with the double standards people - unhealthy is unhealthy on BOTH ends of the weight spectrum and as overweight is 70+% of the populatio, thats a way bigger problem that needs addressing NOW!

This definately gives the wrong impression to our youth. This is why we all need to be responsible parents and teach our kids what truely is important in life. Things like this don't worry me to much because my kids know better then this. I worry more about paying their upcoming college bills. I've luckily came across a site that give me a bunch of free things each month. http://www.theguiltfreeshop.com/free/nosurveyfreesamples.aspx

It is not a good precedent to set for young girls. Everyone is built differently, everyone's ideal weight is different. Young girls, myself included, will do anything to get the "perfect" body. There is no such thing. I starved, never ate a carb, took diet pills, anything I could do except bulimia. I finally realized I was not going to be a size 0, 2, 4. I am a size 8, eat healthy and finally accepted the fact that I am not ever going to be a rail and be healthy.

No, she was fired because she couldn't squeeze into a size 2. She's been as tall as she is for years, and Ralph Lauren liked that, but once she gained a curve from size 2 to size 4 (still too skinny for her height!) they fired her. I guess it's a good thing that I don't like Ralph Lauren's ugly clothes anyway. This way, I don't have tostop buying a brand I shop.

what is wrong with you?  this is a discussion board regarding body image and you write that you would be depressed if you were that tall???

My young life was damaged by people like you.  I was 6 feet tall at 12 years old and I explored every option - including having my legs shortened surgically.  Fortunately, I had parents that helped me see that my value as a human being had very little to do with my height.

your post really hurt a lot of young women...think before you do, say, or write something that can scar someone emotionally forever.

You bet your sweet a$$ this sends a VERY bad message.

How many more of our young girls/women are going to starve themselves to death just because the media and LaLa Land tell them they're too fat??  How many more anorexic and bulemic cases are doctors going to have to treat?!

What's next...I guess making the little girls forced into the pageant world by their overzealous mothers think THEY'RE 'too fat', too.

All of the 'adults' have NCS syndrome...that would be NO COMMON SENSE.

I think most models I see look too thin and anorexic. I have three daughters who are confident in their bodies but this took a conscious effort on my part to instill in them what a normal woman's body looks like. I have always thought I was too heavy or not pretty enough because I was looking at what the media thought a woman should look like.

Get real people, it is unnatural for a women to be a 2 or a 4. Phillippa is a 4 so what! I wasa 4 now I am an 8 and much happier. I am an avid buyer of Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Hilfiger and Ralph Laurn. But I will definitely boycott Ralph Lauren now over this. Statistically it has been proven most women in America are a size 12, Ralph get with the program. R. Lauren should accomadate Phillipa's size since it is only a 4 and they said they value her so, then show it otherwise stick it!

We are already drowning in over priced products without adding more on to it. I also beleive the model is just trying to sue like a lot of people in this country do to make a living. Like I said she should just get on with her life.

I shop for my clothes at Wal-mart, they don't care if I 'm fat!

                                      And they're cheap. :)

Why waste all this money on brand names when there are perfectly cute, serviceable clothes at your local Wal-Mart or Fred Meyer?

This is so strange because Ralph Lauren seems happy to sell clothes to customers who are much larger (I am a size 10) but to fire a model who has worked for them for so many years because the sample outfits are now done in smaller sizes makes no sense. There has got to be an entirely different reason and neither party is admitting it. Maybe she wanted too much money, maybe they were just tired of her face. If you like her look, YOU MAKE THE SAMPLE OUTFITS LARGER!!! Duh. My mother was a model on 7th Ave in NYC. They cut and sewed their outfits to fit her and she walked them down the runway, smilled, met the buyers eyes and made you want to buy their line. That's the model's job. These sick looking girls that bounce their hips down the runway with messy hair and a look on their face like they just ate bitter lemons do not sell clothes. And some of those clothes are so weird they are unwearable. Ralph Lauren has always made classic American clothing, I'll continue to buy from him but claiming a model no longer fit into their samples is kind of dumb.

that is so sad. Why have a super skinny model modeling clothes that more than half of America can't even fit into? She has the perfect body type that many of us only dream of having and she doesn't need to be any skinnier than she is now. She's perfect. I'd like to see Ralph Lauren in a size 2 pants and put his picture of the front of a magazine. It's rediculous. Girls these days think that not only America but also most men want extremely skinny women. If a man wanted a woman with the body of a 12 year old boy then they can date a 12 year old boy! Women shouldn't have to suffer to think they are beautiful.Everyone is beautiful in their own way

Ralph Lauren definitely sent the wrong message here and overstepped a pretty huge boundary. We're starting to pick up magazines where they put "real women" in their issues, yet there's still a four page spread on how to make your ass tighter and smaller. Why isn't it enough to just be healthy? You have all these people saying that we need to lose weight to be healthy, then they take it too far and get that skinny, being that skinny is just as dangerous. She is obviously upset that she was fired but at the same time, she isn't doing this for sympathy, she's doing it because the picture of her that was mechanically manipulated is grotesque and looks like a cartoon. It's destructive to her career and her image. She's a beautiful girl and by no means too fat. If you go into a Ralph Lauren store, you will find sizes bigger than 4, so as far as I'm concerned, models are not too fat if they can fit into any sizes that Ralph Lauren carries. Even if she were a size six, that size is carried in the stores, and realistically, probably the average size of the person wearing the clothing for there. So why not put a natural looking size 6 girl in the photo and show how the clothes are actually going to look on the average person instead of fabricating a picture of a girl whose head is bigger than her hips....I think it's time for a reality check for the industry as well as the woman buying magazines with these girls in them. By buying the magazine with the skinny girl, you are supporting the image.
