Bane of this mother's existence: Cold coffee, warm beer

From Laura T. Coffey, TODAYshow.com contributor

I've never been a real food snob, but living in the Pacific Northwest for many years has rubbed off on me in this undeniable way: I now have a deep and abiding love for good coffee and good beer.

It's funny because I don't drink very much of either beverage. (I couldn't even if I wanted to, for reasons that will soon become apparent.) But the time I do spend drinking good coffee or good beer is an EVENT. Something to be savored. Something to be planned around, even. This is serious business!

Or it had been, at least. Until I had a kid.

It literally took months for me to awaken enough from my sleep-deprived stupor to realize the new pattern that was afflicting me, not just every now and then, but every single day. Each morning I would pour myself a cup of coffee and doctor it up in just the right way, with a little bit of sugar and milk. Then I'd begin tending to my infant son. (As the months wore on, he transformed into a toddler son.) Rush-rush-rush, hustle-bustle-hustle-bustle ... and then I'd finally remember my neglected cup of coffee and take a sip.

Image: Cup of coffee"Oh no!" I would think. "It's cold." (Not just lukewarm, by the way. COLD.)

Good coffee ain't cheap, so I'd nuke my cup and soldier on. And then it would get cold – again!

That's when I'd reach a crossroads: Do I nuke it a second time?

I'm frugal, and I already feel guilty enough about the money we spend on coffee, so you can guess what I've been doing. And I'm here to report that thrice-nuked coffee is DISGUSTING, no matter how good the pot was when it was fresh. The milk in it even starts to curdle into solid little doohickeys that float along the top. (Why does THAT have to happen??)

I also can tell you that coffee sitting in a pot for seven-plus hours doesn't taste that great by the time naptime finally rolls around, either – no matter how much you've been waiting to savor it.

I often encounter a photo-negative of the exact same problem in the evenings with beer – not every day of the week, as happens with the coffee, but often enough to notice a pattern. In a spirit of generosity, my husband will crack open a frosty Sierra Nevada for himself and grab one for me too. That open beer bottle will sit there, forlorn and increasingly dripping with condensation, from approximately 6:45 until 9:15 p.m. when I can finally sit down. That's when the beer and I come face to face with one another – and again, I reach a crossroads.

"Hey Michael," I'll say to my husband. "If I put this back in the fridge, will you drink it when it turns cold again?"

"Why would I want to drink an open beer?" he'll say. "I'll just get a new one."

"But this is a perfectly good beer. It just needs to turn cold again."

"Why don't you drink it?"

"I don't think I'll last that long. I think I'll be sleeping by the time it finally turns cold."

And so it comes to pass that on many a weekday morning, I find a bottle of cold Sierra Nevada sitting open on a refrigerator shelf, losing precious fizziness and zip. I'll feel so cut to the heart by this sight that I'll cover the top of the bottle with plastic wrap or tin foil and vow to drink it that night at approximately 9:15 p.m.

It's so nice to have treats like this to look forward to at the end of a long day, isn't it, moms? :-)

Hmmm... I guess if the rest of the world wasnt starving to death or unable to feed their families then this story might be funny.

In fact, if this is all you have to gripe about be lucky you have everything else in life and time the coffee and beer better. If this is what rattles your nerves then maybe you really need to spend some more time at a soup kitchen or a critical care pediatric unit.................

Tara,

What's your problem, don't you see the the humor in this story? And if you put it behind a "deep problem", then YOU NEED TO LIGHTEN UP! PERIOD!!

Starving families is of course a tragedy, but one person cannot change that alone. If we refuse to laugh and focus only on these tragedies for as long as they exist, we'd all be locked up and on suicide watch. Take a walk in the park, watch some kids play, and find some joy in the the simple things.

Oh Tara get over yourself and your comments about starving families and soup kitchens. Life doesn't always have to be so serious and Laura was giving us a laugh. Try laughing each day Tara and then maybe you won't write such cynical comments to people who are trying to bring sunshine into our lives. Smile Tara and have a wonderful day! Laura, thank you for the nice smile you put on my face with your article!

Laura - maybe you could throw some ice in your cold coffee and call it iced? As for the warm beer - well, how European of you!

I agree with Aunt Louisa, and the iced coffee trick works well in the afternoon. Thanks for the laugh Laura. This happens to dads too.

This is SOOOO my life! My husband keeps complaining about the full, room temperature diet pepsi cans and full cold cups of coffee around the house. Don't even get me started on trying to find a minute to use the bathroom. Sometimes I think about how 6 hours ago I had to go to the bathroom but was in the middle of changing a diaper at the time and wow - I STILL haven't gotten in there! I can't wait to share this article with my husband. (I'll copy and paste so he doesn't see that first comment. : )

and sometimes, I will forget about it. Like Saturday morning. I will

drink it cold after 3 to 4 hours. bye dad

When my daughter was brand new, she would need to eat as soon as I sat down to a hot dinner. I tried to trick her by feeding her first, but then something would happen and I would not eat right away and by the time I sat down a couple of hours would have past and she would be hungry again. This went on for about 4 months. At the time I thought it would never end. She is now nine and I can still remember and laugh about those cold dinners and my satisfied baby.

Hmmm Laura, maybe you should just take that time to enjoy the coffee and beer. It only takes a few minutes. The house isn't on fire, is it?

So funny... I think your dad is right on. I have an at home daycare and often find myself drinking cold coffee. Coffee itself has an acquired taste. The same is true for cold coffee. Don't give up, Laura. It's obviously in your genes to enjoy that cold coffee!

Don't worry - this too shall pass. My two year old helper now follows me around with my full cup saying "mama coffee, mama coffee" as it gets sloshed all over the floor. Good motivation for grabbing it and slamming it down!

Never serve Guinness warm! The ideal temperature for Guiness is 6 degrees C. (about 43 degress F). Now that is not as cold as many Americans make their beers, but it's certainly not warm.

Try getting one of those coffee makers that makes the coffee directly into an insulated caraf. The coffee stays hot for 4 or 5 hours and you don't have to "nuke" it to enjoy your coffee hot. :) Just a suggestion. Cute article though.

I agree with Carriescatz. While I never drank coffee, Dr Pepper was my addiction. My children are now 5, 10, and 19 but sometimes I deliberately let my beer get warm when they are in bed just to reminisce (sp?).

Also thanks Aunt Louisa for reminding us not to take ourselves so seriously after all if you cannot laugh at the little things, the stress would make us all crazy!
