No, this is ridiculous.

However, the parents should be held responsible. What responsible parent gives a 4 year old a knife of any kind? Surely not I!

Look at the situation for what it is. No reform school is needed here, think about the child please!! You are YOUR childs best advocate!

No suspension is needed. But it's about safety. If it's okay for one child to bring a kinfe/fork - then what does it say about the rest.

Nobody take nothing to school. No pencils, pens, earsers (they only end up in ears & noses), no hard sole shoes. Everyone gets pants, shirt, velcro shoes and a winter coat if needed. No books, backpacks (talk about dangerous weapons.....those things are gonna have kids in traction in years to come). While were at it, why don't we just have our kids live at school dormatory style then they don't have to worry about what they take to school or riding the bus.

Parents what to protect their children so much that these insane rules where no one uses common sense prevail. The point is that there is going to be danger sometimes and we need to also teach kids how to deal with that, too. Otherwise we end up raising little babies who live in cocoons and have no idea how to deal with life. Or is it too late???

First taking under consideration he's a scout shows he has good growing qualities. Based on him carrying it and using it regularly it has become part of him just like Dad's or Mom's cell phone they can't leave home without it and they feel lost without it. Remember if you train up a child in the way it should go he will never depart from it. Maybe someone should calmly sit down with him and explain very simply why and why not. As a child he may not truly understand racism or violence in the school place. I say if explained properly you will never have this problem from this child ever again. He looks like a well groomed and well mannered young gentleman. Thank you

Sure. But I would not because I usually eat soup for lunch.

Point is that terrorists crashed planes into buildings using our own planes as weapons against us. If someone intends to hurt someone else, they will find a way to do it. We do need to *also* teach our kids to be observant and to self protect themselves.

I think that perhaps the 6 yr old should have suffered a little punishment.........3 days suspension? 5 days? 10 days? 45!!! days??? WOW

Thank god the teachers didn't have a taser at hand. This just shows where the country is headed, the kid is proud to be a cub scout and the school wants to send him to reform school. Once again showing just how stupid our teachers are, I have never yet met one that has a lick of common sense and I am 66 years old. These teachers are almost stupid enough to be police officiers.

Don't blame the teachers, it is the school administrators that come up with these zero tolerance rules.

I have to wonder, would any of the zero tolerance rules have prevented Columbine or the carnage at Virgina Tech? Does anyone seriously believe a zero tolerance rule would have stopped the killers from taking weapons onto the school campuses?

It is irrelevant if the child is a superstar. There are policies in place for a reason. If a bad child had gotten a hold of his pocket knife, and used it as a weapon.....then what. NO means NO....and as a parent it is the school's responsibility to follow policy. The policy has been established for a reason.

To me this is truely unfair to everyone who makes a simple mistake, or simply forgets 1 thing. Do you punish every time or do you give a warning?? If you make it a big deal the child is bond to test the limits and do it again! If you simply say it's ok, or it was a mistake the child will take it for what it is and not do it again. This kid might have thought it was a cool object and wanted to show his friends what he got and simply forgot that it was a 3 in 1 utensil that might harm someone if used unsafely. The kid is 6 but still a kid/baby and should be warned not diciplined. The person who is making this a big deal might have a zero tolerance attitude and is trying to inforce a zero tolerance policy to everyone and anything but different situation deals with different tactics.

We have become a " zero common sense" society. I believe that the "teacher" should be sent to "common sense school and the to reform school", what a way to humiliate a child.

I would love to have all of these nuckle head adults spend one day in my Beloved Marine Corps learning common sense and using it in their every day life.

I am a middle and high school teacher and I see a lot of things brought to school by students who didn't realize that they couldn't. Most students think of weapons as guns and huge knives and most parents don't see what their child slips into his/her pocket at the last minute. I strongly believe that there should not be a no-tolerance rule. Teachers and administrators should use WISDOM in decision making so that children learn to do the same.

If all public high school teachers were like you, maybe I wouldn't have to spend $9000+ a year on private high school for my kids. At least I have a choice, whereas teachers have to deal with the idiocy every working day. Inpursuit, may your tribe increase!

I am a martail art teacher, a weapon is anything that extends past your hand. You could take off your shoes and tie them together as a weapon. Geez, maybe everyone with shoes should go home suspended, ashamed of an innocent act. I bet the high heels the principle wears are fine right? I was brought to tears over the racial comments. I have mixed children that are white and Japanese, does that mean they are going to go to school with Samurai swords? Which they are taught to respect and to ue properly, just like the Boy Scouts are taught to respect their tools..... or eating utensils. Shame on you for bringing up race. Maybe you should have voted yes with all of the other idiots!!!!

Zero tolerence is for idiots too stupid to use their own brain. These people are not bright enough to be teachers. At my kids high school, after 30 years, they said the drama department could not have "weapons" on stage. Try doing Shakespeare with out so mucj as a plastic sword. The ruling came down the night before opening of "Play it again Sam" in which there is supposed to be a gun. The students tried to use neon colored water pistols but even THAT was DANGEROUS. And our kids are supposed to learn something from these MORONS?!

This kid is probably more responsible than the kids of the people who want to have him drawn and quartered. If times have changed so much, why don't we work to change them back instead of caving in. I would guess that his parents are probably pretty responsible folks and he is a responsible little guy who likes his swiss army knife.

so i guess if you do have children you think they should be emotionaly damaged or they already are emotionaly damaged. you teachers dont have the right to touch my child or destroy them emotionaly its your job to teach them common knoledge and our job to teach them common sence. my children are kind and considarate what are yours

How about a little common sense? Obviously this little boy meant no harm. When you get a bunch of lawyers or educators involved, look out, common sense is hard to find!
