No limit - it's a wish list for goodness sake! But if you raise your kids right you will find they don't list outrageous things or have a list 20 pages long.
As a mother to two grown children, college age, and a 3 year old I believe it is our responsibility to teach our kids kindness and limits. My older children grew up knowing that there are a lot of other kids waiting for Santa to come to their home as well. We gave them a guide line of 5 gifts per child, one of them being a big ticket item. They were thrilled when they got what they asked for but also it made them think of others.
I allow my child to write as much as she wants, but also have conversations with her about it. She's very aware that she CANNOT expect to get everything she wishes for, but should be happy if she even gets one, and that it's up to Santa to decide which one of her wishes to give her.

I let my kids watch Santa actually write his letter to them!
